Because of our patient-centred approach, we care deeply about your oral healthcare and dental hygiene. We strive to teach long-lasting habits at our oral hygiene clinics that provide a healthy future in a comfortable environment.

What is gum disease?

The term “gum disease” refers to a number of health conditions occurring in the gums and tissues supporting the teeth. Among the most common gum problems are gingivitis and periodontitis.

How do I prevent gum disease?

Keeping gum disease at bay requires a good oral hygiene routine, which includes cleaning between the teeth and attending regular check-ups.

As part of your check-up, your dentist will ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle and evaluate your gums for signs of gum disease. When gum disease is detected in its early stages, it is treatable by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Gum disease can also be caused by the following factors:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking high sugar / carbonated drinks
  • Diabetes
  • Undergoing cancer treatments
  • Crowded teeth
  • A weakened immune system
  • Medication side effects

What happens at my dental hygiene appointment?

You will have your teeth cleaned by your dentist/hygienist if treatment is necessary. They will remove any calculus (hard build-up which cannot be removed by brushing alone) and carefully polish any stubborn stains. After receiving an in-depth tutorial on keeping your gums healthy, your dentist or hygienist will review this periodically until you have regained your clinical gum health.
