Teeth Straightening Options: Which Is Right for You?

22/07/2026

Are you thinking about straightening your teeth but don’t know where to start? The good news is that there are more teeth straightening options available now than ever before. The right decision really just depends on your teeth, your lifestyle and what’s motivating you to get the treatment done. Here’s a clear guide to help you get an idea of what options are available to you.

Why Does Teeth Straightening Matter Beyond Appearance?

Many think of teeth straightening as purely a cosmetic procedure, and for many people, the main thing they’re looking to improve is their confidence and the overall look of their smile. But straighter teeth are also easier to keep clean. Crowded or overlapping teeth create areas that are harder to brush and floss properly. This can contribute to a higher risk of decay and gum problems over time. So improving your alignment is often a smart move to improve both the look and the health of your teeth.

Clear Aligners

Invisalign clear aligners are currently the most popular choice for adults seeking orthodontic treatment, and it’s easy to see why. They’re virtually invisible when worn, removable for eating and brushing, and generally more comfortable than traditional fixed braces. Treatment involves wearing a series of custom-made clear trays that gradually shift your teeth into position. Each tray is worn for a set period before moving to the next.

Clear aligners work well for a wide range of cases, from mild crowding and spacing to more moderate alignment issues. Clear aligners aren’t suited to everyone, so we make sure to carry out a proper consultation for each patient’s individual case. The key advantage, beyond the aesthetics, is that you can eat whatever you like and keep your oral hygiene routine entirely normal throughout treatment.

Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are where brackets and wires are bonded directly onto the teeth. They are still one of the most effective orthodontic options, particularly for more complex cases. Modern fixed braces have been considerably refined compared to what they used to be. You can usually be fitted with tooth-coloured ceramic brackets for those who’d prefer a less visible option.

Fixed braces are non-negotiable in terms of compliance (in that they’re always working), which some patients find reassuring. They’re often the best choice where more significant movement is needed.

What About Teeth Straightening at Home?

It’s worth a brief word on this, since at-home aligner kits advertised online have become more widely available. These involve taking your own impressions at home and receiving aligners without a dentist or orthodontist ever examining your teeth in person.

We’d always encourage caution here. Orthodontic treatment moves teeth through bone, and without a proper clinical assessment, there’s a risk of treatment that looks cosmetically reasonable but causes underlying damage to your roots, gums or bite. It’s genuinely worth having a professional involved.

How Do You Know Which Option Is Right for You?

It’s difficult to know which option is best for you without a proper consultation. The right treatment depends on the nature of your misalignment, the condition of your teeth and gums, your lifestyle, and what you’re hoping to achieve. What works brilliantly for one patient isn’t necessarily the right fit for another.

When you come for a consultation with us, we’ll take a thorough look at your teeth and talk through your goals. We’ll always give you an honest recommendation. Including whether the treatment you have in mind is the best option for your situation, or whether something else might serve you better.

How Long Does Teeth Straightening Take?

This varies considerably depending on the complexity of your case and the treatment chosen. Minor alignment issues with clear aligners can sometimes be addressed in as little as six months, while more involved cases with fixed braces might take eighteen months to two years. Your dentist will give you a realistic estimate based on your specific teeth rather than a generic number.
